And there was much excitement

We left Sterling KS Sat morning with light rain. It soon cleared & we had a bit of a tailwind so we breezed into Larned by lunchtime. Along the way- Indian shillouette on the hill, more wheat, Quivira wildlife refuge (truly beautiful & beneficial but we could only see a fraction of it), last but not least Radium...hmmm.
Set up our tents at the city park & had a relaxing afternoon poolside. Then the excitement began... We heard reports for thunderstorms (starting to become the norm) but soon the police came by to warn us that they would be severe. She recommended we take down the tents (70mph winds possible) which Sharon & I did. A woman from a large family reunion invited us to come in the 4-H building with them. Within 7 minutes we had all our gear stashed in the nearby restrooms. Sharon made a mad dash for the reunion, but Klaas, Gosse & I missed the opportunity as the heavens opened, wind tore through, & lightning struck too close!!!.
We managed some laughs though, waiting it out in the restrooms.
There was a break in the storm, so we set up our tents under the picnic pavillion. The storm kicked up again & lasted all night...not much sleep with thunder, lightning & wind!
Sunday is a day off, but we're staying in a motel as more of the same is predicted for tonight.

  1. it's funny what you said about KS surprising you with its beauty. Liz and I were just talking about how the vast openness must be beautiful. Alas, I was too cocky and tired to stay awake on the cross-country bus through Nebraska, which I would guess would be the same. hope you don't get caught in too many more storms! love you- J
